It’s safe to say this summer at our nursing home in West Sussex has been a wonderful one thanks to the fabulous weather we have been enjoying. Most of our residents have been able to sit out in our beautifully landscaped gardens to take part in various activities or to entertain friends and relatives.
In this article, we take a look at how our residents have been making the most of the fine weather around the nursing home in the last few months, as well as some plans we have to finish off the hottest summer since 1976!
Alfresco tea and cakes
We are very lucky at Country Lodge to have a large, perfectly situated garden that benefits from unspoilt views of the South Downs and acres of adjoining fields. This peaceful and tranquil space provides residents with a place to relax and take tea on the patio under the shade of a canopy which offers shelter from the heat of the summer.
There was great merriment in the lounge when Andy turned up with his indoor bowling alley. Hot competition between Charlie and Vernon resulted in an exciting finish, narrowly won by Charlie who got the Chocolates – now doesn’t that sound like a film?
Our residents love to wake to the sounds of the birds singing in the garden and with the great weather we have been having, many of them have taken the opportunity to get outside to watch the birds and other wildlife going about their business. Residents in our new garden rooms have been able to enjoy the wildlife spotting from the comfort of their bedrooms which have French windows opening out onto the garden.
Residents frequently go with their family and friends for a stroll around the garden and take a moment to appreciate our beautiful flowers and our well-stocked fish pond. The pond has been very tempting for birds so we have our own model heron standing guard beside the pond.
Some of the more competitive ‘green fingered’ residents at our Nursing Home West Sussex asked to do their own planting so Activities Organiser, Dolores, ran a sunflower growing competition. The results have been tremendous and the garden is bursting with even more colour than before thanks to some new giant sunflowers. To see some of the entrants and the winning sunflower visit our Facebook page here.
We also love to give our residents the chance to explore the local area and the regular day trips we run are also well-received. This summer our day trips have included a visit to Worthing beach to breath in some fresh sea air along with the opportunity to enjoy a portion of fish and chips and an ice cream. Next week we have another trip out – possibly to the beach again or, if the weather plays up, to different garden centre – maybe there’ll be a winter planting competition?
Summer garden party
Our famous Country Lodge garden party took place late in July and was enjoyed by both residents and their families. We were delighted to have the Featherstone Jazzmen playing live and plenty of tasty food from the BBQ to go round. You can read more about the garden party in our blog here.
